“WE ARE NOT GOING TO THE CHOWDAR TANK TO MERELY DRINK ITS WATER. WE ARE GOING TO THE TANK TO ASSERT THAT WE TOO ARE HUMAN BEINGS LIKE OTHERS”
– Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar
(20th March 1927 at Mahad Satyagraha)
Today March 20, 2022, 95th Year of Mahad Satyagraha.
Mahad Satyagraha was a Satyagraha led by Babasaheb on 20 March 1927 to allow untouchables to use water in a public tank in Mahad of present Raigad District Maharashtra. The Day March 20 is observed as Social Empowerment Day.
By the Manu based Indian Caste system, untouchables were segregated from the other Hindu Castes. They were banned from using of Water bodies and Roads which were used by other Hindu Castes.
In August 1923, Bombay Legislative Council passed a resolution that People from the Depressed Classes should be allowed to use places which were built and maintained by the govt. In Jan 1924, Mahad which was
part of the Bombay Province passed the resolution in its Municipal Council to enforce the act. But it was failed to implement because of the protest from the Caste Hindus. In 1927, Babasaheb decided to launch a Satyagraha to assert their right to use water in the public places.
As a result, boys of 15 to old men of 70 from far and near plodded distances of over hundred miles with bundles containing pieces of bread hanging from their shoulders and reached mahad. About 10,000 workers and leaders of the Depressed Classes from almost all the Districts of Maharashtra and Gujarat
assembled.
On 20 March 1927, led for the first time in their History by a Great Leader of their own the untouchables were marching to vindicate their rights. They all displayed discipline, energy and enthusiasm. The march wendded its way through the streets of mahad and ended at the Chowdar Tank.
Babasaheb took water from the tank and drank it. The vast multitude of men followed and vindicated their right.
On this historic Social Empowerment Day, SEWA SALUTE Our Saviour Babasaheb remembering his Sacrificed life dedicated for Depressed and Upressed.
